Groundwork: fixing what sits underneath
Sometimes the reason the numbers don’t answer the question isn’t the analysis. It’s that the right question was never asked, or the systems holding the data were never built to give it up. These two services deal with the cause rather than the symptom — available on their own, or as the first step in a larger piece of work.
Research & Survey Design
Who it’s for: Businesses about to survey their customers or staff, or sitting on research that didn’t answer the question they had.
Analysis is only ever as good as the data collected. I design the instrument first — what to ask, how to word it, who to ask, how many responses you genuinely need, and how to avoid the biases that quietly invalidate a result. I’ve built national economic statistics and run primary research programmes for major technology companies, including one dedicated to Australian small and medium businesses.
What you get: A tested questionnaire and sampling approach, then analysis of what comes back — with the limitations stated plainly, so you know how much weight the findings can carry.
IT Infrastructure Design
Who it’s for: Businesses whose systems can’t support the reporting they want, or who are about to buy, replace or consolidate something and want it specified properly before the sales conversation starts.
Designing the systems your business runs on: what to host where, on-premises against cloud, how the pieces connect, and what it costs to run once it’s live. I specify servers, storage, networks and platforms, review vendor proposals against what you actually need, and plan the migration so it doesn’t take the business down. I’m certified across Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix and VMware, have designed infrastructure for multi-site organisations of more than 1,000 staff, and led a team of engineers delivering managed infrastructure services. I work across VMware, Azure, AWS and Google Cloud rather than specialising in one.
What you get: An architecture and a written specification you can put to vendors, a costed comparison of the realistic options, and a staged implementation plan. Vendor-neutral — I don’t resell anything and I’m not tied to a platform, so the recommendation is only ever what suits you.
